Connecting Jewish Communities Through Acts of Giving
The Mitzvah Bank is a new Commonwealth Jewish Council initiative that connects Jewish communities across the Commonwealth through acts of giving and solidarity. We serve as a central platform where communities can share their needs — whether for books, prayer items, educational materials, or mentorship — and where others can step forward to fulfil them.
Through this digital space, larger or more established communities can support smaller and emerging ones, strengthening the bonds of Jewish life and continuity across borders.

Donations received:
700 kg of books sent to Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania.
With thanks to our donors: PJ Library, Jewish Book Service, Rimmon Judaica, Barnet United Synagogue, Belmont United Synagogue, The United Synagogue, Cheshunt Jewish Cemetery, North West Surrey Synagogue, Maidenhead Synagogue, Radlett Reform Synagogue, Beth Shalom Cambridge, Sheffield & District Reform Synagogue, Menorah Manchester, Southport & District Reform Synagogue and New London Masorti Synagogue.
Heartfelt thanks from the CJC Vice President in Tanzania, Amir Yehuda, further to receipt of siddurim and chumashim - Jan 2026
"On behalf of our community, we would like to sincerely thank CJC and its generous donors for this milestone donation. We truly believe that education is the greatest form of wealth, and this support has strengthened that foundation within our community.
As you can see from the photos, most of the books are now placed in the Al-Shabazi Midrash. Many members who previously did not have siddurim and chumashim now come regularly to use them. The remaining books will be used in the synagogue and during other Jewish occasions. As Baladi Jews, we live very much as a communal society—most of our activities, including Shabbat and holiday meals, are done together in communion.
Since our Tiklal follows a different tradition, we are also teaching community members prayers that align with our Baladi practice and do not include Zohar."
Once again, thank you so much to CJC. This donation has made a truly meaningful and lasting impact on our community.
With deep appreciation."
The CJC is really excited that the first batch of materials has arrived and been distributed to several Nigerian communities!
Our representative in Nigeria, Arthur-Regis Odidika, commented, "They (the books) are most helpful. Thanks a million".
Our huge thanks to all the UK Jewish communities who donated items to our campaign, and also to those who have helped fund the transportation.

Shalom from Mukono!
Please see the lovely article below written by Orah Lawrence, Community Educator and Gabbai at the Mukono Jewish Community in Uganda , which featured in the Belmont United Synagogue (London) Shana Tova magazine in September 2025. Belmont's congregation donated Judaica to Orah's community this year as part of the Commonwealth Jewish Council's campaign to support emerging Jewish communities across Africa.
